Thirty Years After

After the devastating Spitak earthquake — that marked the closure of 20th century’s dark list of countless catastrophes – the following three troubled decades left behind a violent legacy of epochal confrontations, armed clashes, retreat, collapse and resurgence – an era of instability full of contradictions, that confronts us and all living things on this planet. 

From the very first day of the sudden devastation radiating and spreading from the fragmenting depths of Spitak’s ancient soil, the Armenian Relief Society, with all its global entities, ever faithful to its mission and its long history of humanitarian service, went to work — alongside the entire Armenian nation and countless countries of the civilized world – to reach out and relieve the searing pain of sudden collapse that befell the millennial homeland of our nation.

After an absence of around eight decades – during which the Armenian Red Cross in exile, through its unyielding, devoted humanitarian service across the Armenian Diaspora, had rightfully become the largest and the most active women’s organization in Armenian reality – was returning to its homeland, as Armenian Relief Society.

The scope of the immediate help needed to alleviate the misery of now-ravaged Shirak Province, — meeting the needs of shelter, food, clothing medication and comforting of a population in shock — had forced the leaders of a so far tolerated alien regime, after seven decades, to remove the iron curtain of isolation and open the doors to receive the needed help and succor offered by the civilized world…

Over the following months of the earthquake, in all regions of the Armenian Relief Society, HOMuhis—members of the ARS sisterhood—devotedly toiled day and night, considering silent toil and ignored weariness a true source of fulfillment. Thus, the ARS, bringing its share to the global assistance efforts, organized a dozen flights from various corners of the globe to the disaster zone bearing cargoes of medicine, clothing, food, medical instrument, and all other survival items; participated in many reconstruction and building projects; initiated mobile dispensaries and a psychiatry center; Sponsored missions of medical specialists and volunteer social workers to Armenia, and assisted in the preparation of analytical documentation.

The ARS also organized, and still sponsors, long-range orphan-care programs such as: “Sponsor-A-Child” and the “Orphans Education Fund”. Whenever necessary, members of the ARS Central Executive Board met with officials of the United States, the Soviet Union and Armenia to keep foreign aid programs going and to discuss issues related to the recovery efforts. In 1998, the ARS “Mother & Child” Health Center opened its doors in Akhurian, and in 2005, added a Birthing Center to it, becoming one of the best hospitals of its kind in the province of Shirak.

Yesterday, deeply wounded Armenia was in need of empathy and caring treatment to recover. Today, the Armenian nation is busy building a viable, rising country. Thirty years after the Spitak Earthquake, the Armenian Relief Society also, firmly set on its ideals and humanitarian mission, continues to serve the nation both in Armenia and abroad, with the devoted service of generations of HOMuhis who have been through the crucible of  witnessing death and destruction, famine and epidemics, fear and despair, and have come out of it stronger than ever, hand in hand with the people, ready to continue its humanitarian mission for its people and Homeland, for the greater glory of a healthier, wiser and kinder humanity in peace and harmony with itself.

Երեսուն Տարիներ Ետք…

Քսաներորդ դարու անհամար աղէտներուն մութ շարքը փակող Սպիտակի մահասփիւռ երկրաշարժէն ասդին, երեք խռովայոյզ տասնամեակներ իրենց ետին թողած են դարաշրջանային ընդհարումներու փլուզումներու եւ վերականգնումներու, տարապայման շրջան մը, որուն անհաստատ սեմին այսօր կանգնած կը մնայ Հայաշխարհն ու ամբողջ մարդկութիւնը։

Սպիտակի ընդերքէն ժայթքող ու տարածուող օրհասական կործանումին առաջին օրէն իսկ, Հայ Օգնութեան Միութիւնը, իր համատարած բոլո՛ր միաւորներով, հաւատարիմ իր կոչումին ու մարդասիրական երկարամեայ հունձքին, գործի անցաւ -համայն հայութեան ու քաղաքակիրթ մարդկութեան կողքին հասնելու եւ ամոքելու իր հազարամեայ ժողովուրդին յանկարծահաս ու կսկծալի կորուստներուն ջլատիչ ցաւը։

Շուրջ ութը տասնամեակներու բացակայութենէ ետք — որուն ընթացքին տարագիր Հայ Կարմիր Խաչը, Սփիւռքի տարածքին իր ցուցաբերած աննկուն ու նուիրեալ մարդասիրական գործունէութեան ճամբով, իրաւամբ դարձեր էր հայ կիներու ամենատարածուն ու գործունեայ կազմակերպութիւն –՝ կը վերադառնար մայր հայրենիք որպէս Հայ Օգնութեան Միութիւն։

Աւերեալ Շիրակի մարզի անպատսպար ժողովուրդին անմիջական կարիքները ստիպեր էին, որ օտարածին բռնատիրութեան մը վարիչները ի խնդիր արտաքին անհրաժեշտ օգնութեան ու գործակցութեան, մօտ եօթը տասնամեակներէ ետք, վերցնէին երկաթէ վարագոյրը բանալով իրենց դռները օգնութեան ձեռք պարզած քաղաքակիրթ աշխարհին…

Երկրաշարժի յաջորդող ամիսներուն ընթացքին, Հայ Օգնութեան Միութեան կեդրոններուն մէջ ընկերուհիները տիւ եւ գիշեր ծառայեցին յօժարակամ եւ անշահախնդիր, փառք դաւանելով անաղմուկ բարիքը եւ անտրտունջ յոգնութիւնը:   Երկրաշարժի աղէտեալներու աշխատանքներուն ընթացքին, ՀՕՄը մասնակցեցաւ ապահովելով տասնեակ բեռնատար օդանաւեր, որոնք կ’ընդգրկէին դեղորայք, հագուստեղէն, ճաշ, բժշկական գործիքներ եւ այլ պէտքեր,աշխարհի չորս կողմերէն, մաս կազմեց շինարարութեան եւ վերակառուցման աշխատանքներուն, բացաւ շարժուն դարմանատուներ եւ հոգեբանական կեդրոն, գործուղեց բժշկական մասնագէտներ եւ կամաւորներ դէպի Հայաստան, եւ սատարեց ուսումնասիրութեան ծրագիրներ: ՀՕՄը նաեւ հիմը դրաւ «Որբախնամ» եւ «Որբերու» Ուսման Ծրագիրը, որ հազարաւոր ծնողազուրկ պատանիներ կը շարունակէ խնամատարել: Ըստ պատշաճի, Կեդրոնական Վարչութեան անդամներ Միացեալ Նահանգներու, Խորհրդային Միութեան եւ Հայաստանի պատկան մարմիններուն հետ հանդիպումներ ունեցան: 1998 թուականին ՀՕՄը նաեւ իր դռները բացաւ ՀՕՄի Ախուրեանի Մօր ու Մանկան Կեդրոնին, եւ 2005 թուականին Ծննդատան, եւ այսօր կը հանդիսանայ Շիրակի մարզի լաւագոյն հիւանդանոցներէն:

Երէկ՝ դարմանումի կարօտ խորունկ վէրքեր ունէր Հայութիւնը. այսօր հայրենակերտումի աշխատանքները կը շարունակուին: Սպիտակի երկրաշարժէն 30 տարիներ անց, Հայ Օգնութեան Միութիւնը կառչած կը մնայ իր գաղափարական սկզբունքներուն եւ իր բարեսիրական առաքելութեան զուգընթաց կը շարունակէ իր ազգանպաստ ծառայութիւնը հայրենիքի մէջ: Կեանքն ու մահը տեսած մեր ՀՕՄուհիները, այժմ աւելի գօտեպնդուած իրենց ծառայասիրական սկզբունքներուն մէջ, ամենօրեայ ներկայութիւն են հայ կեանքէ ներս: Եւ երբ կը կարծուէր թէ անհնար է վերակառուցել Հայրենիքը, կնոջական այս վիթխարի կազմակերպութիւնը փաստեց, որ կարելի յաղթել խնամելով ու դարմանելով, սիրելով եւ մահուան յաղթելու վճռակամութեամբ:
