An agreement was signed on May 7, 2010, between the ARS and Haigazian College of Beirut, based on which, annually, one student each, from Artsakh and Javakhk will have the opportunity to continue their four-year studies at Haigazian College.
In keeping with this agreement, Haigazian College shall undertake the education of these students free of charge, while the ARS shall provide for the lodging and related needs of the students.
The agreement stipulates that the students must specialize in a humanitarian career of their choice and, upon completion of their curriculum, must return to their native land and, at least for a given time, serve the needs of the local communities.
On May 11, 2010, the ARS delegation visiting Artsakh had a meeting with the Minister of Education, Vlatik Khachatryan, to discuss details of the selection of the student. The Minister — as during the preliminary discussions of this project — reiterated the support of the Artsakh authorities to this project, promising to make sure that candidates to this program be chosen from the very best of college-age students. The Minister also noted that this program can be started only after the completion of the final exams of the current academic year.
“This program is one of the best examples, on the one hand, of the cooperation between various Armenian foundations, and on the other, of productive coordination between the ARS entities and sister organizations,” stated ARS Central Executive Board Member, Mrs. Ani Minassian, after the meeting with the Artsakh Minister of Education. “On behalf of the Central Executive Board, first, I like to express my thanks to Haigazian College and its President, the Reverend Paul Haidostian, for the unfettered cooperation demonstrated. Special thanks to the ARS entity of Australia, for partially funding the expenses of this project. Thanks, in particular, to the Relief Cross of Lebanon, for assuming the heavy obligation of the students’ lodging and living expenses. I would be remiss in not thanking all sister organizations in Lebanon, who wholeheartedly demonstrated their support to the students,” concluded Mrs. Minassian.
Referring to this program, the President of Haigazian College, the Reverend Paul Haidostian stated: “In the history of the Diaspora, a providential role has been reserved for Haigazian College, so that it may bring its contribution to the progress of the Armenian people via higher education. Haigazian is an institution of linkage, and today, through cooperation with the ARS it creates a bridge that reaches Artsakh and Javakhk. This is a modest step of a larger, richer dream. Our prayers are for steady steps towards true enhancement of the intellectual growth of the youth of our homeland.”
“Armenian youth from Artsakh and Javakhk will go to continue their education in the caring hands of Haigazian, a College of national and international renown, and the hospitable Armenian community of Lebanon,” stated ARS Central Executive Board Member Graciela Kevorkian, who had pursued the legal details of this project. “In the building of our people’s future,” she added, “the best element is the guarantee of higher education for our youth”.
